Activity 3: The WWF: World Wildlife Fund

In 1961, a number of people came together to start an organisation called the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The main goal of this organisation was/is to protect life on earth. Hundreds of WWF staff work in countries all over the world trying to protect our planet and the animals who live here, including the Maui Dolphin. At present there are only 63 Maui Dolphins left in the world and the WWF is asking for our help to protect them. They have created a petition that everyone in New Zealand is invited to sign. If you would like to sign the petition to save them, please follow this link.
For this activity, we would like you to learn more about other work that is done by the World Wildlife Fund to save endangered animals. Please click on one of the two links below and watch the short video.
Clip #2: Tigers
Once you have watched the video, go to your blog and, using full sentences, tell us:
1) The name of the animal the WWF is working to save.
2) What the WWF is doing to help the animal.
3) What, if any, success they have had protecting the animal.

For the first video the animals they're trying to protect are Freshwater Seals, they are helping Female Freshwater Seals find a place to give birth in to ensure that the pups will have a higher chance of surviving. They've dug out the holes and now it's just down to the weather.

  1. Hello Alex,
What a great post about the Freshwater seals. I never knew they were making safe places for them to lay pups, that is so interesting. Well done!

I am personally a little confused about your post as most of it is from the Summer Learning Journey. What is down to the weather? I am mostly reading that there is a safe place for seals to give birth to baby seals so they can survive.

Next time you could increase the font size and re read your work to make sure it makes sense.

  2. Hey there Alex, my name is Billy and I am from the Summer Learning Journey team. I was so pleased to hear that you have completed the entire programme! That's quite an accomplishment, I think your teachers will be very proud of you.

It's wonderful that the World Wildlife Fund are digging holes to increase the chances of survival for the Freshwater Seals. There are so many animals that are at risk of becoming extinct. Thankfully there are numerous organisations set up to help reduce the risk.

Do you have a favourite animal? What is it and why?

If you could be any animal, which would it be and why?

    Thanks, Billy.

  3. Kia Ora Alex,

Well done for completing this activity. I finished this activity too. It's great to see you completing these activities during these summer holidays. Thanks for sharing your learning about this activity. Did you enjoy doing this task? Why? The image of these seals are great. Your explanation to these questions are great. Have you ever seen a seal?

    NICE:)
