Activity 1: Off the Menu

Fishing is a really common activity in New Zealand. In fact, people have fished in New Zealand for centuries. Unfortunately, over the past few decades some people have caught too many fish in one area and left the region without enough fish to refill (replenish) the stocks. When this happens we call the area ‘overfished’ and it is closed to all private and commercial fishing. If people are caught fishing in these areas, they are required to pay a fine (money). The maximum fine for fishing in a restricted area is $100 000.
What do you think about this rule? Is it fair that people are charged up to $100 000 for overfishing?
On your blog, tell us what you think about this rule and why you think it!.

I think that people should be fined for over fishing because if everyone over fished then the amount of fish would drop by a huge margin every day. Since nobody likes losing money the fine acts as a deterrent which therefore stops the majority of fishers from doing so but there are always some people who think they're smarter than the law.

  1. Good morning Alex,

Thank you for sharing your honest opinion on whether you think the $100,000 fine is fair enough or not. You have come up with some great points that could back up your argument. I totally agree with you that this fine is set in place to stop the smallest amount of people who still choose to take the risk.

With the fine being $100,000, hopefully people will take this as a serious warning to stop fishing in prohibited areas. It does send a very powerful message out there. An average worker in New Zealand would earn approximately $45,000-$50,000 per year which means that they would have to work two full years in order to pay this fine. Of course this excludes all additional living costs...

Do you think the government should keep the fine as it is or lower the price? I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions.

    Keep up the great work,
    Susie

  2. Hi again Alex,

Well done for completing this activity. I finished this activity too. It's great to see you completing these activities during these summer holidays. Thanks for sharing your learning about this activity. Did you enjoy doing this task? Why?I love the image that you have used. I agree with you, but then I don't, because yes people is overfishing, but 100,000 dollars is way to much.
    NICE:)
