Activity 2: The Black Drain

Approximately two-thirds of all rivers and one-half of all lakes in New Zealand are too polluted to swim in, according to a recent article in an online newspaper. One of the most polluted is the Tarawera River in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand. Pollution enters the river from a local pulp and paper mill, from local farms and through the local sewage system. Many other rivers in New Zealand are also polluted with waste from businesses and farms.

Use Google to help you find two other polluted rivers in New Zealand.

On your blog, tell us:
1) The names of the rivers. 2) The location of the rivers. 3) What is being done to clean up the rivers (if anything).

Two other polluted rivers in New Zealand are the:

Waikato river in Waikato, it was originally polluted but has now been cleaned up.

The Selwyn river in Canterbury, it is still polluted and the water is now permanently discoloured.

Thanks for sharing your learning about this activity. Did you enjoy doing this task? The images that you have used is great. I love the rivers that you have chosen for this activity. I chose the same rivers as you.

  2. Kia Ora Alex,
Well done for completing another task on the Summer Learning Journey. I hope you enjoyed your summer break. I really enjoyed reading your blog posts. I really like how you have decided to do 2 lakes. Those lakes are disgusting. I also like how you wrote them as short.

Have you ever been to those lakes be for?

  3. Hi there Alex,

It is great to see that you have chosen Waikato river and Selwyn river to talk about in your blog post. Thank you for giving us an update on the current condition of these rivers. Were you able to find out what has been put in place to clean up these rivers? Were there any projects proposed by the government or did the people in the community work together to bring these rivers back to life?

It is pretty sad to hear that the Selwyn river is now permanently discoloured. Were you able to find any other bits of information about this river?

Looking forward to hearing back from you,
    Susie :)
