Activity 1: Towering Timbers

There is a long and rich history of logging in New Zealand. Logging involves cutting down trees. The people who cut them down are called loggers. The trees that they cut down are sold and used to build things (eg. houses), to make products (eg. paper), and to generate (create) heat and power. Over the past two centuries, many of the trees in New Zealand have been cut down by loggers.

Some people like logging because it creates jobs for the loggers and generates money for New Zealand while others are against (opposed to) logging. Many of those opposed are worried that logging will damage the environment. It might also force animals who live in trees (eg. owls) to find new homes.
What do you think about logging?

On your blog tell us whether you think logging should be allowed in New Zealand. Be sure to provide at least two reasons to support your argument.

I think logging should be allowed in New Zealand because:

1. It creates jobs.
2. Many houses, pieces of furniture and buildings are made out of wood.

As long as people replant twice as many trees then they should be allowed to cut down a certain amount.

  1. Hello again Alex, thanks for sharing your thoughts on whether logging should be allowed in New Zealand. Well done on providing two strong points to support your argument. It's true, so many different things are made from wood - furniture, homes, paper etc. Just looking around my bedroom I can see about five different things made from wood. I am not sure there is an alternative resource we could use.

Do you think there is a sustainable way of logging? Maybe we could plant more trees than we cut down? What do you think?

    Thanks, Billy.

  2. Hi again Alex,

Well done for completing this activity. I finished this activity too. It's great to see you completing these activities during these summer holidays. Thanks for sharing your learning about this activity. Did you enjoy doing this task? Why? The images for this activity is well centred and it looks great. I love your stated reasons for allowing logging in New Zealand. I agree with you, but then I don't, because yes it does create jobs for many people, but our native animals will need to find new homes every time, since most of them live near trees. Do you have any reasons for not allowing logging?

    NICE:)
