Summer Learning Journey: Week 3 Day 2

For this activity, we would like you to select one of the pictures below and to study or observe it closely. What do you see?

On your blog, describe the painting in detail. What do you see when you look at it? Please give us as much detail as you can!

Image Attribution: The Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh is in the Public Domain.
I selected the Starry Night.
A swirling blue night sky is dotted with golden balls of light, a dark pillar stands high above a sleeping town. Mountains in the background are like waves as they twist around.

For this activity, we would like to hear about a time when you, or someone you know, experienced a challenge and overcame it.

On your blog, recount a time when you or someone you know experienced a challenge and overcame it.

My mum wasn't born in New Zealand, she grew up in Samoa speaking a different language. When she came here she couldn't speak much English, so she had to learn a lot of new words. After 3 years of studying she's now a qualified teacher.

For this activity we would like you to give coding a try. Click on the link for the website: code.org. If you try an activity and it is too easy, try a harder level!

On your blog, post a screenshot of your completed shape. Underneath the shape tell us what you thought of the coding app. Is it good? Why/why not?

The app only requires simple coding skills and degrees knowledge in maths, it's a trial and error kind of game. I think it'd be good for teaching people (Who don't know much about coding) to draw shapes, that's probably why it was chosen.

  1. Hey Alex.

Wow, your observations on the painting sound like they belong in a book at the start of a whimsical tale. You've got really great descriptive language and I love how you've stung it all into a single mesmerising sentence. I'm waiting for like, a monster or a mysterious figure to appear in the night and descend on the town form the mountains, great job.

Wow, (yes another one) you Mum is amazing, that must have been a difficult time for her and now she's a teacher looking after students. I bet she can use her Samoan to connect with students that speak the language better than English. Do you speak Samoan?

I like how your thinking at a deeper level wondering why the SLJ organisers might have picked the activity in the first place. I think you're probably right but I have know idea, I had no hand in designing the program. Did you enjoy the coding challenge?

Great stuff Alex, congratulations on completing the whole SLJ in such a short time too. Huge respect for your work effort. I hope you enjoy your holidays and enjoy the start of college.

    Daniel :)
