Summer Learning Journey: Week 4 Day 5

For this activity, watch this video of their award winning performance. What do you like about the performance? What did the dance crew do well? What could they work on?

On your blog, write a review of The Royal Family performance. Please talk about the dance, dancers, costumes, and the music. What did you like? What didn’t you like as much? What do you think could have been improved?


I found the dance performance a bit odd (No offence to the dancers). Some of the dance moves (Like the pelvic thrusting) just seemed a bit weird to me. I've no problem with the music, it's just not the kind that I listen to. I did like the back-flip one guy did, and I don't know what could be improved.

I liked doing the venn diagram activity because I learnt a bit more about Amelia Earhart and Jean Batten.

I can't say that I liked the story writing activities since I don't really like writing stories.
Three things that you learned while completing the programme
I learnt that the clothing brand Twenty-Seven-Names got their name from the people that started the company.
I also learnt that Shakespearean English is a lot different from today's English.
Einstein helped with the creation of a type of fridge.
What changes/improvements you would make to the programme for next year
Maybe don't do the teaser week, or if you do, grant points (Even just a small amount per day) for completing the activities. Personally, I didn't even bother with them (And I'm pretty sure lots of others did the same) because there was no point in doing so.

Summer Learning Journey: Week 4 Day 4

For this activity, please read this article about where some famous New Zealand brands got their names from. Brand names are very important to companies as this is how they are known.

On your blog, tell us how Twenty Seven Names got their name. Looking at their clothing brand, tell us whether you think this is a good name for them, or if they should change it to something else! 


Twenty Seven Names got their brand name from the amount of people that helped the company grow, I think it's a bit of an odd name, but it pays homage to the work that those 27 people did in order to create the company. Therefore I don't have any issues with it.

For this activity please create your own tapa cloth design. You can draw your design on paper or using a drawing app such as Google Draw.

For this activity, take a look at the Christchurch street art website and choose two different pieces of artwork. Look carefully at both pieces of art, and identify similarities and differences between the two.

Summer Learning Journey: Week 4 Day 3

For this activity, we would love to know more about your interests (passions) and your future plans. What do you think that you would like to do when you are older? Do you have a specific job in mind?

On your blog, please tell us about your future plans (i.e. what you plan to do when you finish high school or college). Would you prefer to start working right away or to continue with your studies?

When I finish college I'd like to continue with my studies because the higher educated you are, the more money you can make. I would probably take a part-time job like the one I have now and use that to make enough money for bills. I don't really have a specific job in mind, but I have thought about a few: An engineer, a surgeon, a lawyer or an accountant.

For this activity, imagine that you had the chance to write your own movie. What would it be about? Who would be your main characters? What are the important events that would take place?

On your blog, provide a synopsis (overview) of your movie. In particular, tell us the name of your movie, the main events that take place in your movie and the names of the main characters. If you wish, you could do this as a storyboard.

If I could create a movie, I'd want it to be set in the past (ie; roman empire) and follow the story of a family of assassins that travel around killing targets. The family would get caught by an elite group of soldiers and only the son would survive. The boy (Whose name could be Maximus or something related to the time period that the movie is set in) would then be enslaved and sold to a wealthy man who forces the protagonist to fight in an arena as a gladiator (The type of warrior depends on when the story is set). He befriends a fellow slave (Comic relief) and during his first fight, he meets the daughter of the wealthy man (Love interest). All three teenagers escape together and go on the run...
That's a pretty vague idea for a movie but I couldn't really think of names and the setting the story should be in. 

For this activity, we would like to know if you would consider doing a 20 or 40 Hour Famine to raise money for charity.

If you have already participated in a 20 or 40 Hour Famine, please share your experience, including why you decided to participate and some highlights and challenges of the experience. To get full points, please provide at least six sentences.

Honestly, I probably wouldn't do a 20-40 hour famine unless it was for a charity that meant something to me. For example; a family member has a condition or illness, so I would do the famine in order to raise money for them. Also, if I was to do a 20-40 hour famine, I wouldn't really know what to get rid of or stay away from. Overall I probably wouldn't want to do a 20-40 hour famine because a: I'm not famous, and b: I'd rather be doing things that are a bit more productive (Like studying). Although i wouldn't do a 20-40 hour famine, I would donate to others who are depending on the charity and what they were getting rid of. For example: I'd be a lot more likely to donate to a charity for cancer or leukaemia than something for pandas.

For this activity, design a book cover for your favourite book. You will need to think about what needs to be on the cover (the title, author, illustrator), pictures, colour, etc. Please create all of the images yourself (draw or photograph) rather than using images that you find online.

For this activity, we would like you to learn more about ‘Shakespearean English’ - the version of English that Shakespeare used to write his plays. Summer Learning Journey: Week 3 Day 5

For this activity please watch this video about the Pasifika Aquabots competition that was held in Nelson. The students had to navigate their Aquabots around a swimming pool, collecting things and visiting different ‘islands.’

On your blog, tell us whether you would like to join an Underwater Robotics team at your school. Why or why not?


I don't think I would want to join an Underwater Robotics team because, although robotics is fun and I could hang around with my friends doing it, I'd rather play sports and focus on my main subjects.

For this activity we would like to know about your favourite game. It can be a board game, a card game, a game that you play outside with friends (e.g., rugby) or a quiet game that you play by yourself.

My favourite game is probably CS:GO, it's an FPS game with different game-modes like search and destroy, in search and destroy one team plays the terrorists and the other plays the counter-terrorists. The terrorists' goal is to plant the bomb and defend it until it explodes, the counter-terrorists' goals is to defuse the bomb before it explodes. Both teams can win by killing all of the opposing side.

The person that I chose is Albert Einstein, he was a German physicist who developed the theory of relativity, which is considered one of the two pillars of modern physics. His work on the atomic bomb contributed a lot to the discovery of nuclear power.

Marie Curie was a Polish woman who went to university in France, she studied physics, chemistry and maths. She spent all of her career experimenting and discovering chemical elements, she was the first person to use an x-ray machine on a human body. She won two Nobel Prizes for her achievements. Sadly she died from radiation poisoning due to the fact that she carried radioactive materials around in her pockets.

For this activity please think about your own health and well-being (hauora). What do you, or those in your family, do to stay healthy?

On your blog, share five things that you do to stay healthy and strong.


Five things I do to keep healthy are:
- Go for runs.
- Help my family with heavy lifting.
- Try not to eat too much fatty food.
- Exercise.
- Drink lots of water.

For this activity, we would like you to imagine that John Kirwan, Mike King and/or the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge called you up and asked you to design a new poster for their organisation. You could use Google Draw to help design your poster.

I wouldn't want to live in a tiny house because although, yes, it is a nice cost efficient way to live if you're by yourself or with one other person. Trying to fit a whole family would be too hard, there would nowhere near enough space for everyone to live.

I found out that prosthetics can be really helpful, even though they aren't normal limbs.
I was surprised that prosthethics could be 3D printed.

Speaking of fast, for this activity we would like you to design your own fast vehicle. It can be anything! Please draw your super-fast vehicle on paper or use an app to help you. If it was me, I would make my super-fast vehicle something that I could use to get to school and home again each day!

My mum wasn't born in New Zealand, she grew up in Samoa speaking a different language. When she came here she couldn't speak much English, so she had to learn a lot of new words. After 3 years of studying she's now a qualified teacher.

For this activity we would like you to give coding a try. Click on the link for the website: code.org. If you try an activity and it is too easy, try a harder level!

The app only requires simple coding skills and degrees knowledge in maths, it's a trial and error kind of game. I think it'd be good for teaching people (Who don't know much about coding) to draw shapes, that's probably why it was chosen.

If I could create my own YouTube channel, I'd probably get a group of my friends, play games with them, and then take the highlights from those games (ie; extreme skill, comedy) and post them. I'd prefer to create a channel where my friends and I just goof around in games.

Summer Learning Journey: Week 2 Day 5

For this activity, please brainstorm at least five ways we could support the people who are affected by the fires in New South Wales, Australia. You could think of ways to raise money, things to send them, and ways to keep them feeling positive.

On your blog, share your brainstorm of ideas and create a video or audio recording of yourself explaining each idea.


I think we could raise money for people affected by the fires in Australia by:
- Starting online fundraisers.
- Sending over our own firefighters.
- Donating to online fundraisers.
- Doing garage sales or going to markets in order to raise money.
- Let Australians escaping from the fire take refuge in New Zealand.

Whenever I stay over at my Granny's house, I always help out with taking the rubbish out, doing the dishes and other chores that she might want done. She's always happy that I'm helping out, I'm happy with doing a few chores here and there if it means she doesn't have to.

The person I chose is Kate Sheppard
She was a leader in the suffragette movement, whose goal was to bring women the same rights as men ie; voting. Her actions and the actions of the many suffragettes allow women these days to enjoy the exact same privileges as men.

For this activity, read through the seven whakataukī (proverbs or metaphors) presented in this document. Choose one that has meaning for you. Create a poster that features the whakataukī and be sure to include at least one image (a drawing or photograph) on the poster that represents the whakataukī that you chose.

- Values like sharing, respecting elders and co-operation are still very important to the Inuit.

When I was working one day, my boss told me something that someone else told them; "Remember to say hello to everyone on your way up, because you never know who'll meet on your way down" I think that means you should be nice to the people you meet when you're moving up in life, because, if you fall back down, you don't know who'll be there to greet you.

For this activity, let’s imagine that the government decides to create a new $10 bank note and replace Kate with a picture of a different New Zealand woman.

On your blog, tell us who you think the government should put on the new $10 note. Please provide us with a picture of this amazing woman and a short explanation of why you have selected her as Kate Sheppard’s replacement.

The New Zealander that I chose to replace Kate Sheppard on the $10 note is Jean Batten because, like Kate Sheppard, she was a pioneer and her achievements might've showed that women can do the same as men.

For this activity, we would like you like you to write a short story. The story can be about anything that you wish but to receive full points it must be at least 10 sentences long!

Once upon a time, in a kingdom far in the past, there lived a powerful knight. One day, the king called him forth to issue a quest "My daughter's been kidnapped by monsters, etc... go save her". The knight (Whose name was Arthur McNugget) hurriedly sped off on his horse, eager to rescue the princess and claim the 10,000 gold piece reward. 

An hour later, Arthur had arrived at the monster's den. As he slowly crept inside, he began to smell a sickening odour coming from one passageway- so he went that way. Upon seeing a group of hobgoblins huddled around the corpse of a boar, Arthur drew his broadsword and began hacking the monsters down. 

After finishing the last of the hobgoblins, he ventured deeper into the cave- only this time, he came across a huge room full of dead animals. A massive nest made out of bones, hay and skin gave the room a feel of looming danger. Arthur quickly charged right at the nest, leaping over the side and driving his sword straight into... wait- why wasn't he moving? He was stuck in the air, wondering what was happening, until his body exploded.

For this activity, choose a book that you like and write a short review of it. In the review, tell us what the book is about and what you like about it.

The book that I chose is called Hotel Kerobokan, it's about a prison in Bali where hundreds of killers, drug dealers, and other criminals serve time. I like it because although it's set in a prison, the author includes interesting things like the amount of corruption inside the jail. 

Summer Learning Journey: Week 2 Day 2

For this activity, please imagine that you are Mr Mandela and that you are living at Robben Island prison. You have been given a journal and each night you write in it.

On your blog, write a journal entry imagining that you are Mr Mandela. What do you think he did each day? How did he feel? Include as much detail as you can in the journal entry.


Day 23,
Today was very quiet, I mostly stayed inside my cell and only came out to eat my meals. Barely anyone has been fighting and less and less shouting can be heard every day. Some of the guards are nice, whilst others refuse to speak to me. Maybe tomorrow will be different.

For this activity, we would like you to explore the School Strike for Climate Australia website.

Back in the 1900s America was very segregated (There was a divide between races), different races had different privileges ie; White men and women had more rights than black men and women. Rosa Parks was a black woman who refused to let a white passenger have her seat on a bus, she was arrested, but her actions caused an uproar in both black and white communities and major protest began to occur- demanding equal rights for all.

For this activity, we would like you to calculate Jessa’s age when she won the NAIDOC Youth of the Year award. She was born on 7 April 1985 and she received the award on 9 July 2010. Please provide the answer to this question in years, months and days (eg. 20 years, 6 months and 2 days).

On your blog, please post both your final answer and an explanation of how you solved this maths problem. You could write your explanation, or use screencastify to record yourself explaining how you solved it.


I worked this out by subtracting the years and then the months:
2010 - 1985 = 25 Years
7 + 16 = 23 days
May (31)
June (30)
July (9)
= 23+31+30+9= 93
And then you split the days into the following months.
April (30 days)
May (31 days)
June (30 days)
93 - 91 = 2
So the answer is 25 years, 3 months and 2 days.

Hello, my name is Alex.
I'd like you to think about how many men, women and children live in poverty. Coming from a middle class family, I don't know much about not having enough money for food every week, or not being able to celebrate many events due to a lack of funds, but that doesn't change my point of view. Labour's housing plan failed miserably; hundreds if not thousands of families are still homeless, living on couches, in cars or shelters. You've most likely already been told this, but, an extra reminder always helps.

During the summer of 2015 a group of refugees fleeing Syria had their boat's engine fail, Yusra and 3 other passengers jumped into the water and swam for hours in order to stop the boat from collapsing. Yusra's bravery was recognized by the international Olympic committee, and she competed in the Rio games the following year.

For this activity, please choose one person (a changemaker) and read all about them.

The person I picked was Kelly Slater
He is said to be the greatest surfer of all time, with 11 world titles, 55 career victories and the records of being the youngest and oldest world champion.
He's impacted the lives of others by creating an artificial wave pool that can have waves from 6-8 feet in height.

On your blog, tell us three things that you learned from watching these videos, as well as one thing you would still like to know.


1. Serena Williams made 84 million dollars less than Roger Federer.
2. Serena Williams was ranked #51 on the highest paid athletes list.
3. Serena Williams has won at least 23 grand slams.

One thing I would like to know is; Who is better? Roger Federer or Serena Williams?

For this activity, imagine that you were allowed to change your name to anything that you wanted.

On your blog, tell us what you would change your name to and why you would choose that name.


I don't think I'd want to change my name at all because all the people that I know, know me as Alex. Changing it would make it weird and create awkward situations where I could be called my old name.

For this activity, imagine that you were asked to create a travel brochure for Tonga (or a country that is important to you). On the brochure, include lots of great tips about what to see and do in the country.

For this activity, let’s imagine that you could be a superhero for a day. What three superpowers would you most like to have?

I'd interview Michael Jordan and ask him these questions:
