Activity 3: Stranger than Fiction

Here on earth there are more than 298 000 different kinds (species) of plants. Some of these plants live on land and some live in the water. Follow this link to read about 10 of the strangest plant species in the world. When you are finished, choose two of the plants from the list.
On your blog, list three similarities and three differences between the two plants that you chose. To earn five extra bonus points, post a picture of both plants on your blog..

The two plants that I chose are called the Venus Fly Trap and the Pitcher Plant.

Similarities:
1. Both plants are carnivorous.
2. Both are difficult if not impossible to escape from.
3. Both are harmless to humans.

Differences (Pitcher Plant):
1. The pitcher plant uses sweet nectar to lure the ants to their deaths.
2. Once inside the pitcher plant it's too slippery for the prey to escape.
3. Pitcher plants can feed and kill prey.

Differences (Venus Fly Trap)
1. The Venus fly trap can't catch as much prey as the pitcher plant.Differences: (Venus Fly Trap):
2. The Venus fly trap shuts its mouth when prey enters it.
3. The Venus fly trap is part of the Droserceae family

  2. Hello Alex,
Those are really good facts for the venus flytrap and the pitcher plant. I definitely will try to remember these!

It is very unusual that a venus flytrap open and closes like a human. Also, it is so interesting that the pitcher plant can feed and kill it's poor prey. It sounds like they have a whole other mind.

    What is your favourite plant?

  4. Good morning Alex!

I can't believe the Summer Learning Journey is almost over. I didn't know much about the pitcher plant! That's really interesting how they trap their ants. Have you seen the venus flytrap in the Wintergardens at Auckland domain?

It's been a pleasure blogging with you, Alex!
