Activity 2: Living on the Edge

While it can get quite cold in New Zealand, it rarely drops below freezing (00C). Most of the time the temperature in New Zealand is pretty mild. This is not the case in the tundra. The tundra is an area of land (biome) that is cold, dry and completely treeless. Did you know that the average temperature in the tundra is -280C?
Over the past few years, however, the temperature in the tundra has been rising and the weather has been changing. Let’s imagine that your teacher decides to take you on a class trip to the tundra before the weather changes too much and you aren’t able to go.
On your blog, write a letter to your best friend or a family member telling them about your trip to the tundra. To earn full points your letter must have a greeting (eg. Dear…) followed by 5 – 6 sentences of information about what your experience.

Dear Mum,

We arrived at the freezing cold tundra 3 weeks ago, on the first day the cold was unbearable, we were all like ice blocks! On the second day however, everything calmed down a bit so we actually got a chance to admire the landscape, which looked pretty cool. We also saw some reindeer grazing, and some baby foxes playing around. In the next week we explored all over the place, looking at mountain-tops and anything interesting. Anyway, I've got to go now because we need to pack up and move so I'll write to you again some other time.

Alex

  1. Hey Alex, thanks for writing a letter to your mum pretending you are describing your recent trip to the tundra. I like the way you have used a simile in the opening sentence, comparing the cold you experienced to you turning into ice blocks. I love the description about the different animals grazing and playing about as you admired the landscape and your surroundings.

Letter writing is special and it's a shame that less and less people are doing it. I suppose with the rise of the internet and email it has become much cheaper, quicker and easier to communicate. However, there is something about writing letters that is much more appreciated.

Have you ever sent a letter before?

    Thanks, Billy.

  2. Talofa Lava Alex,

Congratulations for completing this activity. I finished this activity as well as you did. It's great to see you completing these SLJ activities during these summer holidays. Thanks for sharing your learning about this activity. Did you enjoy doing this task? Why? Your letter to your mum was awesome. I love the words that you used to describe what it was like in the Tundra. I am sure that you Mum would love to come to Tundra after hearing about your exciting trip. Have you ever received a letter from someone special? Who was it?

    NICE:)
