Care Award: Silver Excellence & Innovation

For one of my CARE award tasks, I needed to complete the 4 Xtra Maths subjects. For Xtra-Maths you need to answer questions on either addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Completing this was slightly hard, since I'd put the wrong answer every now and then.

Budgeting Activity

Last week for maths LS2 needed to plan a menu for an entire week with only $200, I managed to do that with a bit less than $10 to spare. I worked with Taheesha, Nevaeh, Florence, Haylee and Chavda.

The Real Cost For Adopting A Dog

For maths this week LS2 needed to research the cost of adopting a dog in groups, the people in my group were Aung Naing and Joseph. The final lifetime cost for adopting the border collie that we picked was $44,027.79. After finding how much it'd cost, we needed to present our DLO to the rest of the class.

Rugby Pitch Sizes Maths Challenge

 

This week for maths another challenge was to answer questions on rugby pitch sizes. Some of the other questions were: What is the perimeter of a maximum size of rugby pitch? And, what is the area of a maximum size rugby pitch? After finishing all of the other questions, my group needed to create a DLO on how we found our answer.

Rugby World Cup Maths Challenge

 

This week LS2 has been learning about the rugby world cup. We needed to answer maths questions like; What is the difference in seating capacity between the largest and smallest stadiums and, what the the total combined capacity of all the Japanese rugby world cup stadiums is. The question that my group made the DLO on is if all the stadia are sold out each time then what will be the total number of spectators for all the pool matches combined.

Decimal Word Problem Maths Game

This week Learning Space 2 has been working on their own maths game on a subject of our choosing, I chose to make my game on decimal word problems. We also needed to create a character out of shapes and tools without tracing any images and make a gif out of it. I made my character jump up an down when you get questions right, and cry when you get them wrong. After we were done we needed to show the games to our friends so they could give us feedback and test things out. I learnt that I needed to change some links and different things from doing so. I enjoyed doing this because I got to create a game as well as a character and images. We also needed to present our games to the class.

Strengthening Connections To Maths Language

Today for maths we were learning about maths vocabulary, as an example we needed to think of all the different greetings that people use, from hi to namaste and even slang like gidday. Afterwards we needed to fill in a table with the maths related words next to it, in order to decide on where the words should go Te Pounamu, Joseph and I talked to each other and recorded our conversation with screencastify.

Tech At Tamaki College

Today at tech my group was finishing off the painting of our clocks and adding the clock pieces. I've finished painting and adding the clock machine parts so I only need to touch up the edges and put the numbers on. After Tech was finished the year 8's stayed behind and were taught about some of the subjects that they do in college like maths and science. For maths we were drawing a picture using code and in science we were experimenting with dry ice. Thank you to the teachers who showed us how to do things, I enjoyed the challenge and am looking forward to college next year.

Blog Post Data Analysis

                                           As a task for maths I needed to find and record how many blog posts and comments I'd received over my years of blogging, I searched through every month of each year to find different results. In some of my early months (2015) I didn't receive any comments, whilst in others only 1 or 2. Most of the comments that I received over the following years were due to the Learning Journeys that took place (Summer & Winter).

Paper Plane Analysis

This week is leadership week for the year 7s. Leadership week is when the current year 7s gather together and complete activities to grow their leadership skills. This week the year 7s have been completing team challenges to help us develop our leadership skills. For this challenge we were to find new groups. In my group I had Angela, Aung Naing, Mele, and myself. Together we communicated, collaborated, and discussed about this challenge. For this we were to find a helpful website that taught us how to create a paper plane. Together my group and I found a website that taught us how to create a fast paper plane. After creating these paper planes we were to go outside and start throwing our paper planes as a group. As a class the year 7's gathered together and threw their planes group by group in the hall. As a result for the team challenge Julian's group won with a score of 14.1. The furthest throw was Chavda with a result of 14.5. Above shows the DLO that we created together. The graph above shows the distances of each person.

CARE Award: Silver Confidence | Sleep Survey Responses

This was a task for my confidence CARE award, for it I needed to create a survey on a topical issue so I chose sleep. In my survey I asked questions like how long (On average) people sleep for, if technology (Phones, computers etc) stopped them from sleeping properly, if they liked sleeping and when they usually went to sleep. I used a pie chart for this because although I could've used a bar graph I wanted to see exactly how much of the class chose this or that. Another thing in this DLO is my opinion on the options and reasons why, I answered the survey as well.

My Progress In Readtheory

Today in reading our task was to find and make a graph about our Readtheory progress over all of the year, I think that throughout the year I've gotten better and better at answering the comprehension and other questions that the site gives you after you read a text. Depending on what grade/level you're up to the stories or explanations and the questions will get harder and harder, the only way to raise your level is by answering all of the questions correctly.

Mixed Numerals And Improper Fractions Conversion

Today as an extra task from the teacher Jeremiah, Miki and I were tasked with creating a DLO that explained how to convert mixed numerals into improper fractions. We also needed to add in a picture of the game that we were playing because for the game you need to convert mixed numerals into improper fractions. If you'd like to test your own skill with converting the two then play this game But remember to simplify.

Three Exponents Questions - Maths

 

Our maths session today was used to revise our knowledge of exponents and to introduce it to some students who were previously in Learning Space One. Exponents or powers is a shortened version of writing a whole equation. For example, 4 x 4 x 4 = 64 but to simplify it you can write 4 with a little three in the top right corner. I found this activity easy as it was really easy to get used to and I did it last year. I completed the question sheet relatively fast and I really enjoyed doing this work. For this activity we put a DLO together to explain how we answered three of the exponent questions. I worked with Jeremiah and Miki

Maths Division Problem

Today during maths we had three pretty easy problem to complete, after we'd finished it we then needed to create a DLO on it. After that we were allowed to play this game.

Scale Drawing - Maths Week

Last week was maths week, and for it LS2 students were doing scale drawings. We needed to first, find an image that we liked off of the internet, after that we then needed to try and enlarge that image using a 1:2 ratio for enlargement. The next step was to colour the picture, and then frame it. Since this was my first time doing scale drawing I'm pretty happy with how mine came out. The best part of this activity was the colouring in, since I could then play around with different colours to see how each of them looked on the picture. The part that I found hard was the drawing since I'm not very good at copying one thing to another. Next time the only thing I'd like to improve on is time, since I took 2 days to get it done.

M&M Research

Last week in our groups the task was to first research and then write down about M&Ms, one thing that we wrote about was the highlighted history of M&Ms. Along the way my group (Ofa, Avalon, Carl, Joshua W and I) learnt about what the acronym for M&M was, what happened to one of the founders, where the founders received their inspiration from and why they removed the red M&Ms for a decade. Along with adding in videos Ofa and I also made GIFs, mine being the one on the second slide and Ofa's the one on the sixth.

Word Problems

This week for math we were given a sheet of word problems to fill out, after that we were to choose one and create a DLO explaining how we did it. For that task we were to work individually but for the next one we were able to work in pairs. To do the second task we first needed to find the amount of Liz, then Jane and so on. We needed to work it out backwards.

Reflex Activity

Last week's task was to find a pair and together, test each other's reflexes with a ruler. The way that it was to be done was one person sits down and hangs one of their arms off a table, the other person would put the ruler over the top of their hand that was hanging off. After levelling it to the top of the hand the partner would drop the ruler, the amount of centimetres that were shown above the hand that grabbed the ruler before it fell were recorded. If you missed then it counted as a zero, the lowest (Best) you could get without failing was one and the highest (Worst) was thirty. We did three tests like that, one with our eyes open, the other with our eyes closed but listening for a signal to try and grab the ruler and the last with our eyes closed but were tapped on the shoulder. Before we'd started to test however, we were supposed to write a hypothesis, my one was that I'd do best on the listening- but I was wrong. I did the best on the looking tests, since I managed to get a one. After the tests were done, we then needed to get into a group of four with another pair. Marieta and I grouped up with Sky and Jericho. The test batch that we did the best on was the second test for hearing.

Animal Speeds/Life Spans

This last three weeks students have been missing quite a bit of work because we were usually out of school. During catch up time Jeremiah, Ofa and I worked together to create the task above. The task was based on two graphs, The average animal lifespan and the top speed of the animals. While doing this activity we learnt a lot of new things because most statements were true and only a few were false.
