Care Award: Silver Excellence & Innovation

For one of my CARE award tasks, I needed to complete the 4 Xtra Maths subjects. For Xtra-Maths you need to answer questions on either addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Completing this was slightly hard, since I'd put the wrong answer every now and then.

Rhythm Interactive's Visit To PBS

Today a man named Johnny from Rhythm Interactive came over and taught the entire school some drumming sequences. The theme of his lessons were "Together we can make a change". Johnny would drum a beat and then we'd need to copy what he'd done, he said that his teaching method is "If you can said it, you can play it". LS2 was helping the junior students keep to the beat. Johnny gave us all small djembe to drum with and at the end because we answered some questions correctly, our school won seven drums. I enjoyed the session because I got to play some music on a drum for an hour. If you'd like to see Rhythm Interactive's site the link is here.

Blog Post Data Analysis

                                           As a task for maths I needed to find and record how many blog posts and comments I'd received over my years of blogging, I searched through every month of each year to find different results. In some of my early months (2015) I didn't receive any comments, whilst in others only 1 or 2. Most of the comments that I received over the following years were due to the Learning Journeys that took place (Summer & Winter).

Leadership Speech

Today was the day that the year 7s presented their leadership speeches for the roles that they wanted for 2019, the role that I wanted to take was Head Boy but I also put my name forward for Maniakalani Leader. I think I said my speech well even though my voice was shaky.

Leader Speech

Talofa o lo’u ingoa o Alex. Hi, my name is Alex. I would like to be considered for both head boy and manaiakalani leader for 2019, both are positions that mean you need to be actively involved in school life. I have a history of this. Firstly I confidently share all my work on my blog, and currently have 908 posts. I have been a presenter at the Manaiakalani film festival and am often asked by others to help them with the digital side of their learning. I have joined most of the inter-school sports since I was in Year 4. I have represented our school at the Lego Into Orbit competition, I have taught students from Tamaki College how to digitally draw images, and I have placed in the top 3 in the Summer and Winter Learning Journeys for the past 2 years. By taking part in the holiday learning journeys I was already prepared for school when the holidays came to an end.

I have completed my confidence and respect silver CARE awards which mean that I have confidence in my learning and show respect to others. By the end of next year I will have all of my silver and gold CARE awards because as a student leader I know I will need to lead by example, and at Panmure Bridge School that means following our CARE values.

It would be an honour to be a leader in this school and I know that I have the ability to do so. Faafetai lava le afifio mai, thank you for listening.

M&M Research

Last week in our groups the task was to first research and then write down about M&Ms, one thing that we wrote about was the highlighted history of M&Ms. Along the way my group (Ofa, Avalon, Carl, Joshua W and I) learnt about what the acronym for M&M was, what happened to one of the founders, where the founders received their inspiration from and why they removed the red M&Ms for a decade. Along with adding in videos Ofa and I also made GIFs, mine being the one on the second slide and Ofa's the one on the sixth.

The Inchcape Rock

This week, the task for poetry was to first get into our groups and read a poem called Inchcape Rock, after that we needed to each read the verse that we'd chosen out to the rest of the class and create a DLO on the verse that we'd chosen.

Nugget Point Lighthouse

This week one of the things that I needed to do with my group was research and then create a DLO on a lighthouse from New Zealand, the lighthouse that we were given was the Nugget point lighthouse, which is located in Otago. The lighthouse is 148 years old.

CARE Award - Respect | Photo Collage

This task is one of five that I need to do for a CARE award, for it I needed to create a collage out of photos taken this far throughout the year for every subject or activity that happens regularly in school. In this DLO I added Panmure Bridge School's whakatauki, motto, logo and focus (Learn, Create, Share). I used the photos from our shared folder.

[Alex] CARE Award - Respect | Make Dinner For Your Family

This task is one of five that I need to do for a CARE award, for it I needed to make dinner for my family. At first I needed to peel carrots which took around 10 minutes, then I peeled potatoes which took around 10 minutes too, after that I cut both into smaller pieces and placed them into the pot. I then waited for a while so that the vegetables could cook until soft.

CARE Award - Respect | Interview A Person In Uniform

This task is one of five that I need to do for a CARE award, for it I needed to interview someone in uniform. The example for the task was a policeman/woman but since I didn't know where I could find one of them I interviewed the security guard in the Panmure library, I also needed to be careful with my questions because I didn't want to be rude and ask personal questions.

CARE Award - Respect | Researching The Song Respect

Today I completed another task for my respect CARE award, CARE stands for Confidence, Attitude, Respect and Excellence and Innovation. For it I needed to research interesting facts about Aretha Franklin's song Respect. Along the way I found many new and interesting things like for example; the song's been used in the movie Forrest Gump, although I've watched it I never noticed the song.

Kiwi Can

This week during Kiwi Can we had a new topic- accountability. The definition for accountability is being able to take responsibility for our own actions, other values that go with accountability are honesty and integrity. An example of showing accountability is getting to school early, getting work done before the deadline and bringing the correct uniform to school everyday. The Kiwi Can instructors (Mr Matt and Miss Lily) taught us two games, one of them was called Copy Me, for it we were split up into four groups. We then needed to choose one person to be our leader, that person would then pick a card and based on the number that the card had the group would need to do something. Some examples for that are; Fornite dances (10 seconds), pretending to sleep (10 or 5 seconds) and running on the spot (10 seconds). The other game that we played was called fruit salad, for it Group B needed to be put into pairs and in those pairs respond to these commands if said: Green light (Swap places with partner who should be in front), Yellow light (one partner sits on the other's knee) and fruit salad (Power walking around the circle of people). We also played a game of Master G.K.Q (General Knowledge Questions) where one person had to try and make it through the circle of other people without getting a question wrong.

Silver CARE Award: Researching A Respected Leader

For one of my silver CARE awards (Respect) I needed to research a respected leader, I chose to do Gandhi because he's someone that you associate with peace and sometimes protest. I used websites like Wikipedia which helped me find interesting information about where he grew up, lived and died- I only used a small part of all of it.

Comrades Marathon Research

This week for reading one of the tasks that my group needed to do was research the Comrades Marathon, before that though, we were told to get into a mixed group of boys and girls but since there were no more girls left and only boys, my group had 3 boys and 1 girl. After we'd finished the slides I added pictures and attributed them.

Word Problems

This week for math we were given a sheet of word problems to fill out, after that we were to choose one and create a DLO explaining how we did it. For that task we were to work individually but for the next one we were able to work in pairs. To do the second task we first needed to find the amount of Liz, then Jane and so on. We needed to work it out backwards.

Reflex Activity

Last week's task was to find a pair and together, test each other's reflexes with a ruler. The way that it was to be done was one person sits down and hangs one of their arms off a table, the other person would put the ruler over the top of their hand that was hanging off. After levelling it to the top of the hand the partner would drop the ruler, the amount of centimetres that were shown above the hand that grabbed the ruler before it fell were recorded. If you missed then it counted as a zero, the lowest (Best) you could get without failing was one and the highest (Worst) was thirty. We did three tests like that, one with our eyes open, the other with our eyes closed but listening for a signal to try and grab the ruler and the last with our eyes closed but were tapped on the shoulder. Before we'd started to test however, we were supposed to write a hypothesis, my one was that I'd do best on the listening- but I was wrong. I did the best on the looking tests, since I managed to get a one. After the tests were done, we then needed to get into a group of four with another pair. Marieta and I grouped up with Sky and Jericho. The test batch that we did the best on was the second test for hearing.

Tech Reflection

This week during Digital Tech the year 7 group was learning more about coding. At the beginning Ms Anderson showed us an animated video on Scratch, after that we needed to make our own account using the first part of our email as the username and then put Ms Anderson's Tamaki College email as the account email. After that we were shared a slideshow which we needed to first make a copy of and then fill out with screenshots of us creating the Scratch project using the steps already written in the slideshow. Julian and I finished ours early so we were asked to add two more backgrounds into our animated video. 

Assembly: Samoan Language Week | CARE Award: Silver Confidence

Since this week is Samoan language week, and I'm half Samoan, I was chosen to one of the three assembly presenters. The other two presenters were Junior and Angela, they did the Samoan script and I translated that to English. At one point during the script there was a mess up and, after a few seconds Junior just said what was written down on the script in English in Samoan. This works towards my silver confidence CARE award.

1877 Education Act

This week, the other task for poetry was to create a DLO based on what life was like back in the 1870s. I worked with Jeremiah, Jay-Don and Junior to create this. My group decided to do the education law that was passed throughout the country in 1877, for it we needed to research what the teachers wore and what the classrooms looked like. Jeremiah and I did the researching for the writing whilst Junior and Jay-Don worked on getting photos, I drew the second page's pictures.

Charlotte Anne

This week for poetry we were learning about a woman called Charlotte Anne, since it was back in the 1870s women were expected to stay at home, clean the house, look after the children and do all of the other chores. Unlike others Charlotte Anne wore men's trousers, wore boots and worked in a job full of men (She was a Bullocky), for the task however, we needed to watch the ballad poem about her. After that the task was to answer all of the other questions in the DLO.
