Reading Presentation

Today for reading Jack, Aung Naing and I needed to present our DLO on the history topic that we'd chosen. We picked the medieval times. After creating the google drawing on our topic, we also made a kahoot. This part was a bit harder because we wanted to make pictures to go with the questions, so we spent a lot of our time on those.

Provocation And Opinion

 

A provocation is an action or speech that triggers strong feelings about a topic. Recently a major supermarket chain announced that it will no longer sell energy drink to people under the age of 16. My group's opinion is recorded in my DLO that also shows both perspectives. What is your opinion and why?

Exploring Our National Current Events

News editors make decisions every day about which current event stories they will run. We explored the different types of current events that are happening in New Zealand, thought about why the story made the news and plotted the location on a google map. For example; we needed to find a story about an oddity, and that was wellington's new sculpture.

Waltzing Matilda

Today during reading Matthew and I were working together to find the main idea of and summarise the story Waltzing Matilda, it's about a swag man or worker who steals a sheep and gets chased by policemen only to jump into a waterhole to escape. We were unpacking the language and learning about what life was like in the 1890s.

Literary Devices

This week LS2 have been learning about the literary devices because we're going to be looking at poetry soon. As a challenge Mrs Anderson asked us to create a DLO on the literary devices by only using google documents, I found the task hard since I'm used to creating google drawings. There are six different literary devices; Similes, Metaphors, Onomatopoeia, Alliteration, Hyperbole and Personification.

Reading Responses

 

This term for reading we have been focusing on reading responses, our task was to create DLOs or complete activities and if we weren't the first person doing the activity, we were to comment and give feedback to someone before us based on what they'd done. The person that we'd commented on would then reply after reading our comment and start a dialogical conversation. A dialogic conversation is a talk between two parties that involved ideas or opinions, sometimes we had different opinions whilst in others we agreed on the topic. One of the tasks that I completed is a Venn Diagram that compares two articles, the other two are Kahoots on articles that I read. Our learning focus was space.

Oakley Creek

Today in reading our task was to first read a story about a girl who lies to her mum and sneaks off to a creek with her friends, in the end she gets caught and her teacher (who helped her mum find her) tells her that she's lucky to have a mum that'd go looking for her. Before she leaves the house and goes with her friends she's faced with a dilemma, which is a difficult choice between two or more options that you don't really want to happen. Faith (the main character) also feels guilty after she lies to her mum and when she gets caught. After that we were asked to draw guilt and a dilemma on whiteboards because they are two things that the main character felt/had. (The top photo represents a dilemma and the bottom shows guilt)

Fair Trade Chocolate

                   

Last week's task for reading for my group (Rakino) was to first read a story called Fair Chocolate. In this story, we learnt about what a fair trade company is, how the fair trade chocolate company gets their cacao beans, and how the chocolate companies can help the cacao farmers live better. After we'd read the story we then needed to have a learning conversation with each other on different questions regarding the story and things in it. The next thing we needed to do was create a DLO about what fair trade companies are.

My Progress In Readtheory

Today in reading our task was to find and make a graph about our Readtheory progress over all of the year, I think that throughout the year I've gotten better and better at answering the comprehension and other questions that the site gives you after you read a text. Depending on what grade/level you're up to the stories or explanations and the questions will get harder and harder, the only way to raise your level is by answering all of the questions correctly.

Comparing Myths And Facts About Wolves

 

This week has been book week. We have had quite a few challenges based on the stories we read as young children. Our teacher Mrs Anderson has also set us a few challenges based on a few books that she read as a child. This one being Wolves. It is written by Emily Gravett, and illustrated by her too. This book explains and gives a few facts about wolves, and includes lovely images to paint a picture into your head. Our challenge, was to come up with around 5 myths about wolves, and then research them and see if they are true or false. This task could be done alone, or with a partner, so I chose to work with Fraidoon.

Collaborative Comprehension

This week one of our tasks for reading was to partner up with someone from the opposite group (In my case someone from Ms Kirkpatrick's group). I partnered up with Aung Naing and together we needed to first, read the text and then answer the questions. Another thing that we needed to do was provide evidence from the text. The only thing I found hard about answering the questions was needing to provide the evidence from the text. I learnt a lot of new things from reading this text, and one of them was the amount of soldiers (On both sides) who died.

Simile And Metaphor

 

This week for reading one of our tasks was to create a DLO explaining the differences between a simile and a metaphor. I worked with Jeremiah and together we wrote our own definitions for what a simile and metaphor are, the definition of a simile (In simple terms) is a comparison of two things using the words like and as. The (Simple) definition of a metaphor is a comparison of two objects with out using like or as. We also needed to use a simile and a metaphor from the poem The Highwayman as examples.

The Highwayman Summary

This week we have been reading the poem called the Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. It was written in 1913 but is set a long time before. The Highwayman was a British outlaw who would steal gold from people who were in carriages. His lover Bess would later in the poem take her life to warn her loved one about the soldiers who camped in her bedroom. When he found out about Bess taking her life he charged towards her residence where he was shot by the King's soldiers. Legend has it that when the moon is a ghostly galleon upon the cloudy seas he rides towards Bess's residence (an old inn) where he talks to her while she plaits a love knot in her hair.

Book Review

Today for reading we needed to get in to our groups and present our slideshows on the books that we'd read. We needed to explain the theme, the setting, our overall review and other parts related to the book. After we'd explained the work that we'd done our next task was to explain why we did/didn't like the book and who the main characters are as well as where the story is set.

Billionaire Boy - Novel Study

For the previous three weeks Ofa and I have been reading and studying the book Billionaire Boy, which was written by David Walliams. Ofa and I have learnt different skills whilst reading this book like identifying the theme. This book was written to entertain us because it doesn't have real life facts or try to change our thoughts about the characters. I really liked this book because it's a tale of friendship and lots and lots of money.

Novel Study - Billionaire Boy

This term for reading Mrs Anderson has made reading fun for our group by introducing a novel study, for it we needed to partner up and in those partners our task was to read the same book or books by the same author and then complete tasks. This was a great opportunity for people who don't like reading to love reading. This is a fun reading task because we get to work in partners. I'm working with Ofa and together we  chose the book Billionaire Boy. We decided to choose this book because there were two copies for us. This book talks about a boy name Joe Spud who's the richest 12 year old in the world. Joe Spud is spoilt by his rich dad who owns a toilet-paper making company. He's gotten anything he's every wanted like more than 400 pairs of Nike trainers and a roller coaster in the back garden. We're still reading so we'll need to finish the book for the ending.

Sleep Related Words

This week for reading our task was to create a DLO on nine sleep related words, my group used links to make it easy to back and forth between the words. We all had tasks and mine was to write the definition in my own words after reading one online. I also wrote some of the sentences and fixed up others.

The Inchcape Rock

This week, the task for poetry was to first get into our groups and read a poem called Inchcape Rock, after that we needed to each read the verse that we'd chosen out to the rest of the class and create a DLO on the verse that we'd chosen.

Comrades Marathon Research

This week for reading one of the tasks that my group needed to do was research the Comrades Marathon, before that though, we were told to get into a mixed group of boys and girls but since there were no more girls left and only boys, my group had 3 boys and 1 girl. After we'd finished the slides I added pictures and attributed them.

Vocabulary Evaluation

This week for reading the task was to create two DLOs, one of them was for a story that we read called Harry's War which is about a man called Harry who is forcefully enlisted into the army during WW1. After he's enlisted he is then transferred to an army camp in Featherston where he and other soldiers are trained for war, after that they're shipped to England but three weeks after they get there the war ends. The soldiers start to get restless and annoyed since they'd trained for nothing, after a while they staged a riot which lasted days and so when it ended the superior officers ordered them to carve out a chalk kiwi in the hillside.
