Flight Explanation Text

Flight
Right now there are thousands of planes in the world but until 1903 there were none at all so the only way you could travel were with hot air balloons, cars and ships.

4 forces in flight

The 4 things that a plane has are Lift, Drag, Thrust and Weight.

Weight: is what makes the plane go down.
Lift: is what makes the plane lift up.
Thrust: is what boosts the the plane using the engines.
Drag: comes from air resistance, the more air resistance the plane has the more drag it will have.

How do flying things overcome gravity?

Birds: rotate their wings round and round to overcome gravity

Planes: They have bigger wings and engines which they use to overcome gravity

Helicopters: Use their propellers to lift them up and overcome gravity.
How do flying things overcome air resistance?

Birds: Thrust/Lift

Planes: Engines

Helicopters: Propellers

Imagine a 747 is sitting on a conveyer belt as wide and as long as a runway. The conveyer belt is designed to match the speed of the wheels but going in the opposite direction.

Can the plane take off? Why / Why not?
The plane can’t take off the belt because a plane flies through the air by continuously pushing the wind underneath it which causes the air to go underneath it and in return the air pushes the wings up to make the plane fly, a wing is shaped so it pushes the wind down.
