Holiday Reading Challenge Week 3 Day 3 Bonus Activity

Today I did the bonus activity for the third day of the third week, for it I had to write a petition for kids to learn Maori in school that was also polite and respectful.

To whoever it concerns
I ask of you to allow children to learn Maori in their schools, the reason for this is because then children could be able to learn a language that isn't English. I am also asking you to do this because it provides new learning opportunities, for example the children could try to speak to each other using Maori and then bring the language back to their houses and try to teach their relatives.

  1. Hi Alex,

I'm glad that you've chosen to write a petition advocating for the learning of Maori in your school. I agree with your statement that this would be a good learning opportunity - it's very helpful to be able to speak more than one language. I wonder if you would think it a good idea too as the first peoples to live in New Zealand were the Maori and speaking their language would honour their legacy. Given that Maori has been an official language since 1987, it would seem most appropriate to have it taught in school.

In Canada, where I live, we have 2 official languages too. Ours are French and English. We have many many First Nations peoples who were the original inhabitants of our country but, unfortunately, we don't recognize any of their languages 'officially'.

I'm glad that you're participating in the Summer Learning Journey and I hope you're really enjoying your holiday time!!

    Keep up your efforts!

  2. Kia Ora Alex,
I've done this task as well. I really love the way you've explained what you did in this activity. My opinion was to let kids have 4 days at school either than 5.
Would you want to learn Maori?
    Great Work.
